Youth4Peace in Madrid: Youth Voices on Europe as a Global Power
In the Youth4Peace project, we were delighted to participate in the recent international conference held in Madrid, Spain, from April 24th to 26th, 2025. The gathering marked another vital milestone in our ongoing work to engage young people across Europe in shaping a more peaceful, inclusive, and active continent.
This conference focused on a timely and complex theme: "Europe as a Global Power"—a topic that sparked deep conversations around diplomacy, security, and the role of youth in shaping the EU’s future on the world stage.
Exploring Europe’s Global Role
The event began wtih experts' engaging sessions exploring Europe’s evolving relationships with key global players. Discussions addressed both the challenges and opportunities facing the European Union as it navigates its position in an increasingly multipolar world. For many young participants, this was a rare chance to directly engage with complex global issues—and to begin imagining solutions.
Throughout the conference, interactive workshops encouraged participants to explore regional challenges, rethink foreign policy frameworks, and develop ideas for cross-border collaboration. A visit to Madrid City Hall offered insights into how cities, too, can play a diplomatic role, acting as connectors between Europe and the wider world through cultural exchange and international partnerships.
The next day focused on security and defense session which addressed the importance of strategic autonomy and the need for a more coordinated European security response in a time of global uncertainty. Participants worked in teams to craft proposals for a more effective, youth-inclusive approach to European security and global engagement—ensuring that the next generation has a voice in these critical areas.
While the focus was international politics, the heart of the conference remained people-centered. Young participants across Europe used this opportunity to learn from one another, build friendships, and exchange ideas on how Europe can act with greater unity, compassion, and purpose on the global stage.
These interpersonal connections are what make the Youth4Peace project so powerful: beyond the policy discussions and expert sessions, it fosters a truly European spirit of solidarity. As Europe continues to redefine its role in a changing world, we believe young people must not only be consulted—they must be included as co-creators of the future. The Youth4Peace conference in Madrid was a strong step in that direction.
